make moneyAfter battles with getting the ball airborne off the first tee and trying to get a score better than a bogie, the mind can tend to wonder exactly where it shouldn’t.

I remember having my best start ever and was well in control of things up until about the 6th hole. As early in the round as it was and as silly as it sound now, I started to wonder how much money I could make with an even par round.

You may well laugh but I can promise you, nobody laughs louder than me after looking back at how it all came together.

With money in sight, all be it 12 holes away, disaster struck.

One of the great things about this game is that as soon as you think you have things in control, it can take it all away in the blink of an eye. In my case it came in the form of an out of bounds, skulled nervous chip and 3 putts to round out a solid 7th hole.

That was that as far as the money went.

Months later the same thing happened but the good part is that I had not started to think about money until the 12th so it was not till the 13th that the wheels fell off and reality shrunk me back into my box.

Interestingly enough it was not until I had seen golfers who I had beaten in the past collect their first winnings as a golf pro that I became focused enough to not choke. (Did I say that)

The other thing I have not mentioned at this point in time is that the amount of money available to win should not really be something that stimulates nerves but..

I have seen golfers shake in their boots for a $1 wager.

Truth be known, the winners would get a little over $100 back then with money being paid out all the way down to a whopping $20 which covered the cost of entry.

What it didn’t generally cover was the case of beer enjoyed between 4 of us when driving the customary 3 hour Sunday afternoon trip, the Chinese takeout or the ritzy hotel we crammed into every week.

To put it in perspective, the weekly wage was approximately $120 per week.

Back to the money.

What a relief when my first big $20 check was won. The sky was now the limit and all the monetary nerves had disappeared??

If you believe that, you believe in the tooth fairy!
